A Hobby or a Job? You Decide.

Earlier this morning in my home:

"Darling, breakfast is ready!"

"What? Already? But it's just 7 AM!"

Usually, our family eats between 8:30 and 9 AM.

"But don't forget, we have plans to see the movies and eat Chinese food near the theater. I told you we'd need to have breakfast early. Shall we begin?"

"Ah, yes... However, I should mention I have an online English conversation lesson at 7:30."

"You have what now?"

I detected a shift in her tone.

"That's why I scheduled the lesson for 7:30."

"But today is your day off, isn't it?"

"It is, but since I’m seeing the movies with you, an afternoon lesson wasn't an option. That's why I chose one early in the morning, although I didn't realize breakfast would be this early."

"My love..."

My wife gazed at me earnestly.

"This is just like your work, or job, isn't it?"

"No, no, no... These English lessons are simply my hobby."

She interrupted, "No! That's a 'job' masquerading as a 'hobby'!" (Angry)

"No, it's not like that..."

My resistance was futile; the situation was decidedly against me.

"Okay, I'll cancel it."

"You don't need to. It would disappoint the teacher."

I wanted to say that it wouldn't inconvenience the teacher, but I knew that was beside the point. It would only exacerbate the situation.

"Then please eat promptly and attend your lesson. But, Darling, in the future, when we're out together, do forgo the English lessons. From my perspective, they are your job. Understand?"

"Yes, dear. Let's eat."
