Encounter with Two Elderly Couples: A Stroll's Tale (June 26th, 2022)

Yesterday evening, as I was meandering down my usual walking path, I noticed a couple proceeding ahead of me, strolling side by side. Their back figures made it impossible to discern their exact ages, yet I ventured a guess - they might not be too far removed from my own years.

This pair, however, was distinctly holding hands.

To see an older couple walking arm in arm is not unusual, but those hand-in-hand seemed less common in Japan, or so it struck me. Still, apart from a fleeting "how sweet" moment, it didn't evoke any profound sentiment.

As I continued on my path, another couple emerged from the opposite direction. Notably, the husband of this pair seemed utterly captivated by the sight of the hand-holding duo. From my perspective, his eyes widened in apparent surprise at their mutual grip.

This couple then passed first the hand-holding pair, and then me, at which moment a woman's voice echoed, "Stop it, it's so overbearing!" Presumably, the man whose eyes had widened earlier had attempted to hold his wife's hand.

This unexpected utterance piqued my curiosity, yet I resisted the temptation to turn around. I was left to ponder: Did that couple end up hand in hand, or did they not? My musings remained in the realm of imagination.

Regardless of the outcome, I think it was a heartwarming sight, one that painted a vivid picture of life's endearing idiosyncrasies.
